What Makes Vivint Different

Vivint sits at the top of the professional installation market alongside ADT, but with a fundamentally different philosophy. While ADT excels at monitoring infrastructure, Vivint is built around smart home automation. A Vivint-installed home gets a unified control panel (the Vivint Smart Hub) that manages security, locks, lights, thermostats, and cameras from a single app.

Vivint's Outdoor Camera Pro uses on-device AI to distinguish between people, animals, vehicles, and packages - without sending footage to the cloud for processing. This means faster alerts, fewer false notifications, and better privacy than cloud-dependent competitors.

Camera Quality & AI Features

Vivint's Outdoor Camera Pro is a central part of the system. It offers person detection, event clips, app viewing, and visual verification on supported monitoring plans. Detection accuracy and viewing latency vary with placement, lighting, network conditions, settings, and service availability.

Vivint's Smart Clip feature packages short video clips around alarm events, giving monitoring staff instant visual context when an alarm triggers. This reduces both false dispatches and response time when a real intrusion occurs.

ℹ Military Discount: Vivint offers discounted equipment packages for active-duty military and veterans. Call Vivint directly and ask before agreeing to any quoted price.

Financing & True Cost

Vivint's pricing model is frequently misunderstood. Equipment is sold through a financing arrangement - typically $0 down with monthly equipment payments spread over 42–60 months at 0% APR. Monthly monitoring ($29.99–$44.99) is billed separately and is month-to-month after the financing period ends.

PlanMonthly MonitoringCameras/Features
Smart Security$29.99Basic security, no cameras required
Smart Home$39.99Cameras + full smart home automation
Smart Home 24/7$44.99Adds 24/7 continuous video recording

The key risk: if you want to cancel during the financing period, you'll need to pay off remaining equipment balance. For a $1,200 equipment package with 30 months remaining, that's a significant early exit cost.

Vivint vs. ADT vs. SimpliSafe

Vivint beats ADT on smart home automation depth - there's no comparison in app quality and device integration. ADT beats Vivint on monitoring infrastructure redundancy (six centers vs. two for Vivint). For pure security monitoring, the difference is minimal in practice. For smart home control, Vivint is clearly ahead.

Against SimpliSafe, Vivint wins on camera quality and automation but loses on cost, flexibility, and the ability to own your equipment outright from day one. SimpliSafe's $30/month Fast Protect monitoring is nearly as good as Vivint's at half the equipment cost.

Notable Incidents & Disclosures

Ongoing - Sales practice complaints

Vivint has over 3,000 BBB complaints in three years and multiple state AG investigations related to its door-to-door sales force. Common issues: unauthorized hard credit inquiries, signing customers into contracts without full disclosure, misleading competitor comparisons, and difficult cancellation processes.

2020 - State AG investigations

Multiple state attorneys general investigated Vivint's door-to-door sales practices. Vivint settled complaints in several jurisdictions.

What Buyers Should Know
  • The most sales-related complaints of any major home security company.
  • Never agree at the door - request the full contract in writing first.
  • Verify any credit inquiry authorization before signing.
⚠ Use With Awareness

Vivint's product and professional installation are genuinely strong. The sustained pattern of aggressive sales tactics, unauthorized credit pulls, and difficult cancellation is the concern - documented over many years across many states. The product is good; the buying experience requires vigilance. If choosing Vivint: request everything in writing, read the full contract, and confirm the ETF before any agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Vivint integrates with both Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice control of locks, lights, and thermostats. However, cameras are not viewable through these platforms - camera access requires the Vivint app directly. Apple HomeKit is not supported.

Yes, Vivint offers a moving program where they reinstall your equipment at a new address. This typically involves a reinstallation fee ($99–$299 depending on your contract status) and requires you to remain under your existing monitoring agreement. Equipment financing terms remain unchanged.

Both offer 24/7 professional monitoring with cellular backup. ADT has six redundant monitoring centers vs. Vivint's two, giving ADT a theoretical edge in disaster scenarios. In normal operations, both have comparable response times (under 60 seconds to operator contact). Vivint's advantage is video verification integration - monitoring staff can view camera footage directly before dispatching police.
